A Crystal Maze Adventure

Souki and his best friend celebrated their 10th birthdays with a dazzling crystal-themed party at the Crystal Maze in London! Last year, we went all out with a Chelsea FC themed cake for Souki's 9th birthday (check out the blog post here), but this year, the double celebration called for something extra special. The crystal theme provided the perfect inspiration for a truly magical sweet treat spread.

Details of the Crystal Confections

I celebrated Souki and his friend's big day by creating a bespoke collection of desserts, incorporating the crystal theme into every detail. From the show-stopping two-tiered cake to the delicate macarons and custom juice box wrappers, each element was designed to capture the sparkle and fun of the occasion.

The centerpiece of the celebration was a magnificent two-tiered cake. The top tier, a "Fraisier" cake, was a French-style strawberry delight featuring genoise sponge, fresh British strawberries, and a luscious "crème mousseline." It was adorned with homemade raspberry purée, mini choux puffs & macarons, and a custom iced biscuit "10" cake topper.

The bottom tier, catering to the guests' preferences, was a Lotus cake with a Japanese genoise base, Lotus-flavored Italian meringue buttercream, Lotus spread, and Lotus biscuits. The contrasting flavors and textures made this cake a true crowd-pleaser.

I loved the way the Lotus biscuits peeked out from the gold-framed "crystal" cake wall, the charming strawberry faces on the top tier, and the overall elegance of the design!

These weren't just any cookies; they were miniature works of art! Each royal icing cookie featured a mesmerizing blue and jade marble effect and was decorated with edible gems – my homemade "kohakutou" candies, a traditional Japanese sweet that looks remarkably like real crystals.

Some cookies were shaped into the birthday boy’s initial, as well as the number "10," adding a personal touch to these dazzling treats.


Sweet & sparkle mini macarons and choux puffs

Beyond the cake, I created a generous supply of mini macarons and choux puffs. The macarons, delicately colored in shades of blue and jade, were filled with my silky Italian meringue buttercream. The choux puffs were generously filled with diplomat cream, a dreamy mix of custard and whipped cream that's my personal favorite!

Even the juice boxes got a special treatment! I designed custom wrappers inspired by the Crystal Maze logo, tying the entire theme together seamlessly.


An Extra Cut…

Which dessert disappeared the fastest? The kohakutou candies! These edible gems were a huge hit with the kids. As soon as they realized they were sweet and had a unique crunchy texture, they were gone in a flash! This crystal-themed birthday was a joy to create, and it was incredibly rewarding to see the smiles on Souki's face and his friend's. Happy 10th Birthday, you two!
